Integrating Academic and Career Development

This paper explores the tension in higher education between a focus on pure intellectual exploration and professional training in the context of potentially worrying trends about underemployment and “suboptimal” career trajectories for college graduates. The authors follow by offering recommendations for and examples of practices that (1) help students to align their educational and personal goals; (2) engage in ongoing reflection and narration; and (3) augment core curricula to address skill and experience gaps.
